Providing women-centred care is the ethos of Dr Lionel Steinberg’s practice. The choices you make for you and your baby are respected and honoured. Lionel will support you in all birth choices, while keeping you and your baby safe.
Lionel’s experience enables him to support all women experiencing high-risk pregnancies, and attain the safest outcomes.
Affectionately known by his patients and colleagues as ‘Vaginal Lionel’, Lionel’s focus is in empowering and supporting women to achieve low-intervention, vaginal births, and low caesarean rates. If a caesarean section is your desire, Lionel is fully supportive of your birth choice.
He is particularly sought after to help women achieve a vaginal birth after a previous caesarean section (VBAC), and also naturally birth babies who are breech.
Lionel is accredited at Frances Perry House, St Vincent’s Private and Epworth Freemasons and can deliver at any of these hospitals.
Gynaecological Services
Lionel is experienced in diagnosing and treating all gynaecological issues, regularly treating patients with endometriosis, PCOS, uterine fibroids, fertility issues, menstrual disorders and general gynaecological needs.
When required, Lionel provides laparoscopic surgery for patients, including those who may require hysterectomy.
Dr Steinberg graduated from Medical School at the University of Cape Town in 1983, before moving to Melbourne to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has also practised in Essex, England.
Since arriving in Melbourne and making Australia his home, Lionel has been a familiar presence in the city’s best and busiest birth suites.
