Frances Perry House specialist Philippa (Pip) Costley

Dr Philippa (Pip) Costley

MBBS, FRANZCOG

Dr Philippa (Pip) Costley has been a member of the Women’s Obstetric and Gynaecology Specialists since 2016.

Pip became passionate about obstetrics and gynaecology during her undergraduate medical training at Monash University. Following her internship at The Alfred, she commenced specialist training through The Royal Women’s Hospital. Pip has continued at The Women’s as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and teaches future specialists as well as medical students through the University of Melbourne.

She currently is the Integrated Training Program Co-ordinator, and co-ordinates the training for all of the doctors at The Women’s who are training to be specialist obstetrician and gynaecology. Pip also is a member of the RANZCOG Victorian Training and Accreditation Committee and overseas the training of specialist doctors throughout Victoria.

Pip cares for her obstetric patients at Frances Perry House alongside her colleagues Dr Kym Jansen, Dr Jenny Dowd, Dr Carin Black and Dr Renee Wong, as part of Women’s Obstetric and Gynaecology Specialists (www.womensogs.com.au).

Women’s Obstetric and Gynaecology Specialists (WOGS) is the only obstetric group practice located on site at Frances Perry House.

Together, the five female specialists provide obstetric and gynaecology care 24 hours a day. Patients are delivered exclusively at Frances Perry House, which means that all patients have access to the full range of specialist and emergency services should the need arise.

The group work together to provide a broad range of obstetric services. These include:

  • Pre-pregnancy counselling
  • the management of multiple pregnancies (including vaginal delivery of twins)
  • trial of labour after caesarean section
  • external cephalic version for management of breech pregnancies
  • previous pregnancy loss (including placement of cervical stitch)
  • recurrent miscarriage
  • managing IVF-conceived pregnancies
  • managing patients with complex medical comorbidities such as hypertension or diabetes

The Women’s Obstetric and Gynaecology Specialists team also includes experienced midwives, which enables them to provide patients with holistic multidisciplinary care throughout their pregnancy.

Alongside her obstetric practice, Pip has a particular interest in the management of pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. She has completed advanced training in laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery and is a member of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopic Society. She performs a wide range of gynaecological surgery, including laparoscopic hysterectomies, endometrial ablations and treatments for endometriosis. Pip also performs many office gynaecological procedures, including IUD insertions.

Pip loves getting to know her patients and their families and sharing their journey.

She is known for her friendly and compassionate nature and ensures that her patients receive personalised care every step of the way. She is committed to supporting patient choice (anything from physiological birth to maternally requested caesarean section) while ensuring the safety of the women and babies in her care.

In her spare time, Pip plays netball and enjoys keeping fit, and – time permitting – will happily attend any music or sporting event that Melbourne has to offer.

Most of all, she loves spending time with her husband and four young children.
